Well I was off on my Hall of Fame picks. I picked Rich Gossage and Tim Raines to make the Hall of Fame today. I was only half right as Gossage is now a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame receiving 466 votes or 85.8% of the votes. Raines wasn't even close receiving only 132 votes for 24.3%, but he still has another 14 years on the ballot.
Goose Gossage becomes only the fifth relief pitcher elected in the Hall of Fame joining Hoyt Wilhelm (1985), Rollie Fingers (1992), Dennis Eckersley (2004) and Bruce Sutter (2006) in Cooperstown. He played 22 seasons from 1972 to 1994 for nine different teams. He lead the AL in saves three times (1975,78, 80). By the end of the 1987 season he ranked second in major league history in career saves, trailing only Rollie Fingers. Goose was a 9-time all-star, won the Relief Man of the Year award in 1978, and pitched in three World Series.
The following candidates received less then 5% of the vote and are no longer eligible for the hall. Rod Beck, Travis Fryman, Robb Nen, Shawon Dunston, Chuck Finley, David Justice, Chuck Knoblauch, Todd Stottlemyre, Jose Rijo, Brady Anderson. All were on the ballot for the first and last time. Also gone is Dave Concepcion who failed to make the hall in his 15 years on the ballot.
Tommy John and Jim Rice both have one last shot next year. Rice just missed out getting into the hall with 72.2% of the votes. Mark McGwrie didn't see any more votes (128) this year then last year. McGwrie went from 23.5% to 23.6%.
